Featuring Heather Maliska, NASA, who spoke about the challenges of integrating Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in the National Airspace, the 2017 Chili Cook-Off was a resounding success. Guests sampled a wide variety of chilis while Mrs. Maliska presented on NASA’s involvement in attempting to create collision avoidance protocols and systems for a busy, analog, air traffic system. At the end of the event, team members explained the 2017 FIRST STEAMworks game and presented the 2017 robot, Toasty. Toasty showed off a little, climbing the rope a few times and demonstrating the speed and maneuverability of its hybrid drive system. At the end of the day, team member Blake won the chili cook-off and the silent auction raised over $3,300 to support the operations of FIRST Team 585 and our outreach programs.
