Are You Ready to Join Robotics?

FIRST Team 585 offers FIRST Robotics programs for all ages!

Welcome to the start of another great year of robotics!  There are FIRST Robotics programs for kids from 1st through 12th grade, and they are all available here in Tehachapi!  See below to find the program that is right for you!

1st through 3rd Grade

FLL Jr. at Tehachapi High School

Students in FLL Jr. work in small teams to:
  - Explore a part of their world
  - Build a LEGO model and a LEGO WeDo robot
  - Share their work with others at an FLL Jr. Exposition

These groups are led by student members of THS FIRST Robotics Team 585. Each week, they will be guided through activities that help them learn about water and how we use it. They will then research something that is a part of our water cycle and develop a LEGO Model, Robot, and Display to share what they’ve learned.

Teams will share their projects at the FLL Jr. Exposition on November 11 in the THS Cafeteria. They will also have the opportunity to participate in an expo at LEGOLane in the winter.

Mondays from 6 PM to 7:30 PM

Registration Ends on September 18th

4th and 5th Grade

FLL at Tehachapi High School

Students in FLL work in small teams to:
  - Innovate Solutions to a Real World Problem
  - Build and Program LEGO Mindstorms Robots
  - Celebrate Their Work at a Competition

These groups are led by student members of THS FIRST Robotics Team 585. They will work together to develop a robot to best complete a selection of challenges based on this year’s theme - our water supply.  Outside of team meetings, they will work on identifying a problem associated with our water supply; innovate a solution to that problem; and share their solution with others.

Teams will compete at an FLL Qualifier in the Central Valley Region in early December. Teams that advance from the Qualifier will compete at the Central Valley Championships in February.

Mondays from 6 PM to 8 PM

Registration Ends on September 18th

7th and 8th Grade

FTC at Tehachapi High School

Students in FTC work as a team to:
  - Design and build an 18” x 18” x 18” robot
  - Program Android phones to control their robot
  - Compete with other schools from around California

This team is mentored by and works alongside THS FIRST Robotics Team 585. Each week, they will work towards designing, building, and programming a robot to best tackle this year’s challenge. Students work with industry mentors and learn construction and programming techniques that are relevant to careers in Science, Technology, Engineering anad Mathematics.

Teams will compete in a series of League Competitions in the Antelope Valley during the winter. Qualifying teams will compete in a Championship in the LA Area.

Mondays from 5:30 PM to 8 PM

Registration Ends on September 18th

9th through 12th Grade

FRC at Tehachapi High School

THS Robotics FIRST Team 585 students work as a team to:
  - Design, Build, and Program competitive robots
  - Learn and Apply industry relevant skills in STEM
  - Promote STEM and robotics to children of all ages

As students work to achieve the above goals, they are assisted by industry mentors and community members. As part of the FIRST Robotics Competition, each year, the students design, build, program and operate a 120-pound robot to compete in a timed challenge with other robots on the field simultaneously. When not working on the FRC challenge, team members are refining past designs, hosting STEM outreach events, and competing in related actvities sponsored by our industry partners.

The team annually competes at the Las Vegas Regional in April.

1st through 3rd Grade

FLL Jr. at Cummings Valley

The Cummings Valley teams are also led by student members of THS FIRST Robotics Team 585. They work towards the same goals as the teams at Tehachapi High School, but the meetings occur at Cummings Valley to accommodate different schedules.

Mondays from 3:45 PM to 5:00 PM

4th and 5th Grade

FLL at Cummings Valley

The Cummings Valley teams are also led by student members of THS FIRST Robotics Team 585. They work towards the same goals as the teams at Tehachapi High School, but the meetings occur at Cummings Valley to accommodate different schedules.

Mondays from 3:45 PM to 5:00 PM

4th and 5th Grade

FLL at Golden Hills

The Golden Hills teams are also led by student members of THS FIRST Robotics Team 585. They work towards the same goals as the teams at Tehachapi High School, but the meetings occur at Golden Hills to accommodate different schedules.

Fridays from 3:20 PM to 5:00 PM

6th through 8th Grade

FLL at Jacobsen Middle School

Jacobsen Middle School has a strong tradition of FLL, with multiple teams competing in the LA Region each year. Students at JMS apply to join the teams each fall and are broken up in teams which meet multiple times a week to compete in early November.

What did FIRST Team 585 for the 2017 FRC Challenge - FIRST STEAMworks?

Our 17th Robot for the FIRST Robotics Competition, Toasty, and his brother, Moldy, were designed to tackle the FRC STEAMworks Challenge

This year's FIRST Robotics Competition challenge hosts boilers that must be pressurized with oversized whiffle balls, an airship that needs gears to get it moving, and ropes for the robots to climb when the airship is ready for liftoff! Join us as we prepare for this steampunk adventure!
